My Travel Plans for 2015

Happy New Years everyone! It’s officially New Year’s Eve, and I’m about to go inhale Mexican food and margaritas, watch some fireworks in the old city, and then go dancing. Yay!

While I’m a little sad that I’m not celebrating with my friends from Beijing, today I’ve been thinking about all of my travel plans for next year (some people have resolutions, I just have countries), and I’m pretty excited!

My plans are determined by one thing: Money.

When all the shit went down in Beijing, I ended up having to call my mum in tears-I was literally left penniless, and the only way I had enough money to get back to my friends house was because a lovely stranger could see I was in trouble and insisted I take 300RMB (about $60), and as far as I’m concerned she earned a place in both heaven and my heart that day!

Anyway, I was just lucky that my mum had some money tucked away and could help me out, but this does mean that this year has financially been a huge step backwards. I started this year with no debt, and moved to Beijing to save money, and now it’s gotten to the point where I owe my mum a good chunk of cash.

It’s also her 50th birthday in February, so on the 8th of February I’m flying home to Christchurch. While I’m ridiculously excited to catch up with family and friends (there are a few people I haven’t seen for years), I must admit that I’m not too happy to be headed to pancake city (I say this because the city has been flattened, not because it’s famous for its pancakes, which would be awesome).

I think it’s because I associate Christchurch with always wanting to be somewhere else. From the time I was in high school I wanted to be anywhere but where I was, and while I can now say that there are certainly worse places to be, the fact that I don’t have a return ticket booked is somewhat concerning.

So here’s how it’s going to go:

I’m going to fly in on Feb 8th, hang out for a month or so, and get some work done. I’ll stuff my face on kiwi food, visit friends and family, and hopefully do a bit of travel in the South Island. If it gets to mid-March, and I’m still broke, I’ll book a flight back to Chiang Mai, since I’d much rather be broke in Thailand than broke in New Zealand.

If however, I’ve managed to pay my mum back a decent amount, and book a ticket out of New Zealand I’ll be heading to….dun dun dun…South America!

Regardless of when I can leave, I’m definitely going to South and Central America next year. And I can’t wait! We all know I have a thing for Spanish speaking men and margaritas (I know, I know, that’s Mexico), but i’m also looking forward to doing some travel with Izy from thewrongwayhome, and visiting one of my besties in Brazil, when she has her baby in June. I get to hold him, kiss him, and then hand him back when he cries. Aunty Stacey has a nice ring to it.

I have a huge list of countries that I’m looking to visit next year, but I’ll save that for another post. On the top of my list is Cuba, before it gets too Americanised (I love you America, I just love you more when I’m actually in the United States), as well as Chicago so I can finally see some of my friends from when I was an Au Pair.

2015 is going to be awesome! If you think I’m enthusiastic now, be thankful you won’t be with me at midnight, when I usually start rambling about how incredibly amazing this year is going to be, and how it’s going to blow all previous years out of the water.

Have a good one guys!

I’m bummed we didn’t go to Cuba now! We were planning to go as a side trip from Mexico but thought it would be too hard with the little ones. Now that the Americans are allowed in I’m sure it will be so different.

I agree! They can’t quite rock up to Cuba just yet though, so we still have a bit of time. I don’t mind the Americans so much, it’s more just the huge corporations like McDonalds etc which I’m sure will be getting on in there as soon as they can.
